La Jolla, C.A. – ArtPower at UC San Diego is proud to present New York City’s Bang on a Can All-Stars performing Brian Eno’s Music for Airports at San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 2. Composed thirty-seven years ago, Eno’s ambient classic finally receives its U.S. airport premiere. This landmark live event takes place on Tuesday, October 27, with two special performances, at 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM. In 1978, Brian Eno redefined how we relate to music in our everyday lives with his release of Music for Airports – a mesmerizing, dreamy, and intense sonic landscape. While Eno did not compose the piece for live performances, and the recording of which is an assemblage of tape loops and synthesizer tones – in 1998 Bang on a Can All-Stars reimagined the work, recorded it with live instrumentation and took it on tour.
After the ensemble’s debut performance in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times described their interpretation of Eno’s piece as “gripping,” while adding significantly “much more color and texture than in the original.” The New York Time commented, “The new ‘Music for Airports’ is not a reproduction but a transformation. Like Stokowski’s transcriptions of Bach, Bang on a Can’s ‘Music for Airports’ finds a latent Romanticism amid the mathematical structures. It also pulls the music away from Mr. Eno’s rock background and claims it for an orchestral tradition.”
Artistic Codirectors of Bang on a Can, Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe noted, “Music for Airports kicked off a whole web of musics that hadn’t existed previously. But the unique factor about Eno’s work was that although it could and can exist in the background of everyday life it is music that carries a potency and integrity that goes far beyond the incidental. It’s music that is carefully, beautifully, brilliantly constructed and its compositional techniques rival the most intricate of symphonies. The live realization of Music for Airports stays close to the source. We have had the great pleasure of sharing the project plans with Brian Eno along the way. We are indebted to him for giving us the experience of getting inside and out of this monumental work.”
Since their celebrated 1998 recording of Eno’s Music for Airports, Bang on a Can All-Stars have brought this work to live audiences and raves across the globe with concerts at many prestigious festivals and venues including Lincoln Center, Royal Festival Hall in London, the Sydney Opera House, and public performances at Brussels International Airport, Schipol Airport in Holland, and John Lennon Airport in Liverpool.
ArtPower at UC San Diego’s presentation of Music for Airports on October 27 marks the premiere of the work in an airport on U.S. soil.
“In looking at the 2015-16 season, we wanted to expand the ArtPower program and provide what no other organizations can,” said Jordan Peimer, ArtPower Executive Director. “Through Bang on a Can All-Star’s performance of Brian Eno’s ‘Music for Airports,’ we hope to enable the arts to transform important civic site, creating a lasting, memorable cultural experience. More over, in the years since Mr. Eno wrote this piece of exuberant music, the experience of travel has become exponentially more stressful; we hope everyone who attends will be able to carry this event with them and to be just a bit more grounded in this space which is itself the transition between earth and sky.”

About Bang on a Can All-Stars
Formed in 1992, the Bang on a Can All-Stars are recognized worldwide for their dynamic live performances and recordings of today’s most innovative music. Freely crossing the boundaries between classical, jazz, rock, world and experimental music, this six-member ensemble has consistently forged a distinct category-defying identity. The San Francisco Chronicle has heralded the All-Stars as “the country’s most important vehicle for contemporary music,” and in 2005 they were awarded Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year. About Brian Eno
Ambient pioneer, glam rocker, hit producer, multimedia artist, technological innovator, worldbeat proponent, and self-described “non-musician” – over the course of his long, prolific, and immensely influential career, Brian Eno was all of these things and much, much more. Brian Eno began experimenting with electronic music in the late 1960s. As a producer and musician, he helped define/revamp the sound of several blockbuster musical acts of the 1980s and 1990s, including U2, David Bowie, and the Talking Heads. Eno created the genre of ambient music, using it to define his sound as a solo artist and to produce records for other collaborators.
