As Princeton University’s Director of Jazz Studies and as the leader of the borders-leaping trio Indo-Pak Coalition, Rudresh Mahanthappa embraces traditional and contemporary music. That he does so with his Indo-Pak Coalition by fusing of-the-moment jazz and age-old South Asian genres is perfectly in character for this award-winning saxophonist, who was born in Italy, grew up in Colorado and attended college in Boston, Chicago and Denton, Texas.

A Canadian-based choir that brings together strangers to learn songs and perform them will be at Border Field State Park for a concert on Oct. 13.

“Choir! Choir! Choir!” plans to have singers performing on both sides of the border during the event, scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

“When you sing with others, you become bonded in ways that strengthen yourself and expand your sense of community,” Nobu Adilman, one of the group’s founders, said in a statement. “The opportunity to experience this with the people of San Diego and Tijuana, across borders and languages, is very exciting.”

ArtPower at UC San Diego’s 2019–20 season will feature over 30 performances by internationally renowned artists with a special focus on modern Asian music.

Subscriptions went on sale this month for the new season, which will celebrate artistic and cultural diversity in chamber music, dance, global music and jazz.

The special Asian series opens on Nov. 5 with Dengue Fever, recognized for their blend of 1960s Cambodian pop and psychedelic rock.

In the spring, ArtPower celebrates the Hindu holiday of Holi with “the best party band in years,” Red Baraat Festival of Colors, which is known for merging hard driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz, and raw punk energy.

La Jolla, CA—ArtPower at UC San Diego’s 2019–20 season features over 30 performances by internationally renowned artists and ensembles. This season, ArtPower celebrates the inclusion of a diversity in ideas, styles, and cultures and the globally-engaged series brings artists into direct conversation with the San Diego community.

This year, the Global Music series focuses on artists modernizing Asian music, updating conventions with contemporary performance. Presenting in collaboration with La Jolla Playhouse, the series opens with Dengue Fever, recognized for their blend of 1960s Cambodian pop and psychedelic rock. In the spring, ArtPower celebrates the Hindu holiday of Holi with “the best party band in years” (NPR), Red Baraat Festival of Colors is known for merging hard driving North Indian bhangra with elements of hip-hop, jazz, and raw punk energy.

Presenting performances down the coast of San Diego, the Dance series features Aakash Odedra Company performance at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla; Kyle Abraham’s A.I.M at Balboa Theatre in Downtown San Diego; and Rosie Kay Dance Company’s award-winning 5 SOLDIERS, at Liberty Station’s White Box. Other highlights this season include a conversation with James Beard award-winning cookbook author and the host of Netflix series Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, Samin Nosrat and award-winning chef, radio host, and restaurant owner Evan Kleiman; return of ArtPower favorite author David Sedaris; and a free, participatory concert at the U.S./Mexican border with Choir! Choir! Choir!—which will celebrate the unique friendship, culture, and community we share and highlight the beauty of the border region through song.

“Our commitment to excellence and exploration is unwavering,” says Executive Director Jordan Peimer. “And we invite you to not only experience your favorite artforms, but also to get out of your comfort zone and encounter something unexpected.”
