A.I.M by Kyle Abraham

“Elastic and electric, luxuriantly rippling, poetically arranged with moments of perfect stillness that arrive amid splashes of expression.”—Dance Magazine

The “magnetic dancers” of A.I.M (New York Times) demonstrate a diverse range of choreography, all created by Artistic Director Kyle Abraham. Repertory includes: The Quiet Dance, a quintet set to Bill Evans’s sentimental rendition of the Bernstein classic Some Other Time; Show Pony, an energetic new piece performed by Princess Grace Award winners Tamisha Guy and Marcella Lewis; Meditation: A Silent Prayer, a group work featuring voice-over recording by Carrie Mae Weems, MFA ‘84 and visual artwork by Titus Kaphar; Drive, a high energy, propulsive work set to thumping club beats; and a duet excerpt from Dearest Home, Kyle Abraham’s 2017 evening-length work that explores the concepts of love, longing, and loss.

Aakash Odedra Company
Rising

“Rising reveals an exceptionally agile dancer who, it appears, has no trouble slipping between styles, effortlessly multilingual.”—New York Times

One of the most exciting young contemporary dancers and choreographers in the UK, the “simply breathtaking” (Globe and Mail) Aakash Odedra takes the stage in the captivating solo Rising with choreography from acclaimed international artists Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Russell Maliphant, and Odedra himself.

In Rising, Odedra draws on his background in the classical Indian dance disciplines of Kathak and Bharatanatyam while remaining intrinsically contemporary in style and concept. Exploring different processes and aesthetics in the pieces created for Rising, Odedra highlights different aspects of himself to create a new personal language: lyrical and graceful, brutal and raw, edgy, and animalistic.

This performance is presented in partnership with the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center.

Rosie Kay Dance Company
5 SOLDIERS: The Body is the Front Line

“Lust, shock and awe… 5 SOLDIERS is a disturbing, illuminating and necessary glimpse into a world we mostly prefer to ignore.”—The Guardian

In 2008, British choreographer Rosie Kay joined The 4th Battalion The Rifles, to watch and participate in full battle exercises, and visited the National Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. The culmination from her experiences is the award-winning, five-star work 5 SOLDIERS.

Inspired by input from serving and former soldiers, 5 SOLDIERS is a thrilling and humane portrait of army life and tells the stories of five men and women serving on the front line. Deeply realistic, stark and thrilling, 5 SOLDIERS offers no moral stance on war, but instead questions what it is that we ask of our soldiers. With Kay’s trademark intense physical and athletic dance theater, 5 SOLDIERS explores how the human body remains essential to war, even in the 21st century.

Making its San Diego debut, 5 SOLDIERS has earned five-star reviews, a nomination for Best Modern Choreography in the National Dance Awards, and topped the UK’s Best Dance charts in The Observer, The Guardian, and The Independent.

5 SOLDIERS is funded by Arts Council England and presented 30 in association with The British Army.

Choir! Choir! Choir!

Choir! Choir! Choir! (led by Canadian artists Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman) forms impromptu choirs of strangers to learn songs and perform a concert together. Holding events all over North America, they have performed in holes, on hills, and on big stages at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Joe’s Pub, Art Gallery of Ontario, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and many more. And they’ve been by visited by guest singers such as David Byrne, Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, Rick Astley, and Tegan and Sara. Choir! Choir! Choir! exists to celebrate music and push the boundaries between practice and performance, artist and audience, offering therapeutic benefits with the ultimate side effect: a powerful community.

In this participatory event, singers of all levels will unite on both sides of the US–Mexico border to sing with Choir! Choir! Choir! and celebrate the unique friendship, culture, and community we share in the border region of San Diego and Tijuana. There are few places on earth so scenic where you can gather people from two countries at once to create beautiful music together and share in how special it is to be in this particular place in the world. While we will be divided by the physical border, music knows no boundaries and our voices together will transcend barriers.

While attendance on the US side of the border is limited, attendance on the Tijuana is open to all. If you know of people who would like to participate and are closed out, we urge you to recommend that they participate there. The easiest method of attending is to either take the tram or park on the US side of the border and walk across. Once there use a ride sharing app like Uber and arrange transportation to Las Playas de Tijuana. (The Beach). The event will occur right at the border wall on the beach. We expect that the experience will be the same on both sides. PLEASE NOTE A PASSPORT IS ALWAYS REQUIRED TO CROSS INTERNATIONAL BORDERS. ArtPower is not directly managing the Tijuana event, it is being coordinated by ERIZO.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED BUT DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION
Due to state park regulations, registration is required for this event, but does not guarantee admission. We will accept participants until we hit the maximum capacity of 500 set by the state park. We want to make sure we have as many people participating as possible, hence why online registration is a bit higher to account for no-shows. Attendees must board an event shuttle to attend this event and be transported to the event space. Attendees will not be admitted to the event if they drive in their own vehicle or enter the park any other way than the event shuttles. More information on shuttle location and schedule to be announced soon.

This event takes more effort and commitment from our patrons than we typically expect, but we hope it will be well worth the challenge to be a part of this truly unique binational choral event. Please read the following instructions carefully.

Registration:

Once we reach 500 registered people for participation the day of the event we will not be able to accept anymore due to capacity restrictions set by the park. People who arrive to participate without registering will be turned away by park rules, we suggest arriving early to secure your spot. IF YOU NO LONGER PLAN ON ATTENDING PLEASE NOTIFY ARTPOWER VIA EMAIL AT MOCLARK@UCSD.EDU SO WE CAN RELEASE YOUR SPOT FOR SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS EAGER TO PARTICIPATE.

An Evening with David Sedaris

”Sedaris … sucked me into some nerdy netherworld where real life becomes weirder and funnier and darker and bleaker than, well, real life.”—Alan Cumming, New York Times

In its review of David Sedaris’ new book Calypso, the Washington Post said, “After 25 years and nine essay collections, after publishing 500 pages of his own diary, the most shocking thing David Sedaris can do is reveal that he’s been holding things back.”

Following its publication in May, Calypso immediately shot to the top of the NY Times bestseller list, and now David returns to ArtPower for his reading and signing at Balboa Theatre. Slashing through cultural euphemisms and political correctness, he will delight the audience with twists of humor and intelligence as he shares both published stories and works-in-progress.

Come early or stick around post-performance for Sedaris’s legendary book-signing sessions. Books will be available to purchase from Warwick’s.

Section B and C seats are available on the Balboa Theatre website.

Quatuor Van Kuijk

“Style, energy, . . . and a sense of risk. . . . These four young Frenchmen made the music smile.”—Guardian

Currently BBC New Generation Artists, Quatuor Van Kuijk won first prize at the 2015 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition, as well as the Best Beethoven and Best Haydn prizes. Since their formation in 2012, the quartet has quickly established an international reputation, playing concerts in Europe, Australia, the U.S., and Asia, and receiving accolades at the Trondheim International Chamber Competition and the Aix-en-Provence Festival Academy. The quartet is currently in residence at ProQuartet, Paris, where they study with members of renowned ensembles, including the Alban Berg, Artemis, and Hagen quartets.

Maurice Ravel: String Quartet in F; Franz Schubert: String Quartet no. 10 in E-flat Major; Akira Nishimura: String Quartet no. 2 “Pulses of Light”

Gabriel Kahane

“A star of New York’s new-music scene.”—Los Angeles Times

The morning after the 2016 presidential election, singer-songwriter Gabriel Kahane took a two-week train trip across the United States with no phone or internet, embracing 8,980 miles of monkish Amtrak existence. The result is this hymn to the analog intimacy of American rail culture as antidote to the fragmentation and efficiency of modern life. Alone at the piano, Kahane draws from dining-car conversations he had with dozens of strangers—cowboys, postmasters, religious luddites, software engineers—to sing of his own upended assumptions about the body politic as revealed through his unplugged railroad exile.

Keyon Harrold

“Harrold’s pop sensibilities and activist leanings shine through on the album, which is tied together by its catchy melodies—a rarity in critically acclaimed circles of modern jazz.”—Rolling Stone

Raised from the fires of (now infamous) Ferguson, Missouri, Keyon Harrold has developed a reputation as one of the world’s most sought-after, emotionally electric young trumpeters on the scene. His latest album, The Mugician, examines our troubled times through a far wider lens than any one tragedy. Sweeping and cinematic, the music draws on elements of jazz, classical, rock, blues, and hip-hop to create something uniquely modern, unmistakably American, and triumphantly cohesive—thanks to Harrold’s virtuosic skill as a trumpeter and songwriter, and his relentlessly optimistic belief in brighter days to come.

Braxton Cook

“As a modern day Jazz musician and millennial at the same time, I like to blend the lines between genres and styles while still maintaining elements of the tradition.”—Braxton Cook

One of this generation’s emerging voices on the alto saxophone, Braxton Cook is also a talented vocalist and songwriter, whose sound blends soul, R&B, and jazz. Raised in Prince George’s County, MD, Cook’s upbringing helped to shape his unique style, which captures the spirit of the Jazz Age while continuing to push the genre forward for his generation.

A graduate of Juilliard, Cook has played alongside Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Jon Batiste, and Robert Glasper; toured with Grammy-nominated trumpeter Christian Scott; performed with Rihanna at MTV’s 2016 Video Music Awards and on America’s Got Talent 2015 and 2016 seasons; and recorded with renowned rappers Mac Miller and Anderson .Paak  on the song “Dang!,” from Miller’s album The Divine Feminine. Cook and his newly formed band will perform their latest album, Somewhere in Between, which aims to inspire artists and people from all walks of life to embrace their uniqueness.
