A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky: The World of Octavia E. Butler offers a blueprint for a creative life from the perspective of award-winning science-fiction writer and “MacArthur Genius” Octavia E. Butler. Written by award-winning author Lynell George, this book was drawn from her time researching the Octavia E. Butler archive at the Huntington Library as the recipient of the library’s Alan Jutzi Fellowship. More than a biography, A Handful of Earth, a Handful of Sky is a collection of ideas about how a writer looks, listens, and breathes—how to be in the world. The book draws the reader into Butler’s world, creating a sense of unmatched intimacy with the deeply private writer.

George not only engages the world that shaped Octavia E. Butler, she also explores the very specific processes through which Butler shaped herself—her unique process of self-making. It’s about creating a life with what little you have—hand-me-down books, repurposed diaries, journals, stealing time to write in the middle of the night, making a small check stretch—bit by bit by bit.

George will be in conversation with Los Angeles artist Connie Samaras, an avid admirer of Butler’s prose which served as the inspiration for her 2019 project “The Past is Another Planet”, an illustrious depiction of the Huntington Library, home to Butler’s archive.

Deirdre Bair

National Book Award–winning biographer Deirdre Bair explores her 15 remarkable years in Paris with Samuel Beckett and Simone de Beauvoir, painting intimate new portraits of two literary giants and revealing secrets of the biographical art in her new book, Parisian Lives.

In 1971 Bair was a journalist and recently minted PhD who managed to secure access to Nobel Prize–winning author Samuel Beckett. The next seven years of intimate conversations, intercontinental research, and peculiar cat-and-mouse games resulted in Samuel Beckett: A Biography and propelled Bair to her next subject: Simone de Beauvoir. The catch? De Beauvoir and Beckett despised each other. Her seven-year relationship with the domineering and difficult de Beauvoir required a radical change in approach, yielding another groundbreaking literary profile.

At ArtPower, Bair will speak about Parisian Lives—including never-before-told anecdotes and details that were considered impossible to publish back in the 1990s and that give audiences a new window on the all-too-human side of these legendary thinkers.

Trailblazing vocalist and guitarist Msaki creates a sound that combines soulful folk, Xhosa lyrics, and African polyrhythms with moments of sincere improvisation. Her raw delivery disrupts your senses as she weaves subtle tales of love, loss, home, revolution, and hope. For this performance, Msaki plays with the Golden Circle, an ever-evolving and expanding band of incredible musicians from different backgrounds that was created to retain and promote Africa’s identity and culture through soulful music.

An Evening with David Sedaris

David Sedaris, the master of satire and one of today’s most observant writers addressing the human condition, returns with the acerbic humor, social commentary, and outlandish stories that transfixed a sold-out audience at his last year’s ArtPower show. Slashing through cultural euphemisms and political correctness, he will delight the audience with twists of humor and intelligence as he shares both published stories and works-in-progress.

Takae Ohnishi and Friends

UC San Diego lecturer Takae Ohnishi teams up with friends from the San Diego Symphony—principal flautist Rose Lombardo and associate principal cellist Chia-Ling Chien—in an evening of some of Bach’s most beloved pieces. It will include Sonatas for the Viola Da Gamba, Flute and Basso Continuo, as well as selections from Bach’s solo cello suite and the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue for Harpsichord.

Choir! Choir! Choir!

Choir! Choir! Choir! (led by Canadian artists Daveed Goldman and Nobu Adilman) forms impromptu choirs of strangers to learn songs and perform a concert together. Holding events all over North America, they have performed in holes, on hills, and on big stages at Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, Joe’s Pub, Art Gallery of Ontario, Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and many more. And they’ve been by visited by guest singers such as David Byrne, Patti Smith, Rufus Wainwright, Rick Astley, and Tegan and Sara. Choir! Choir! Choir! exists to celebrate music and push the boundaries between practice and performance, artist and audience, offering therapeutic benefits with the ultimate side effect: a powerful community.

In this participatory event, singers of all levels will unite on both sides of the US–Mexico border to sing with Choir! Choir! Choir! and celebrate the unique friendship, culture, and community we share in the border region of San Diego and Tijuana. There are few places on earth so scenic where you can gather people from two countries at once to create beautiful music together and share in how special it is to be in this particular place in the world. While we will be divided by the physical border, music knows no boundaries and our voices together will transcend barriers.

While attendance on the US side of the border is limited, attendance on the Tijuana is open to all. If you know of people who would like to participate and are closed out, we urge you to recommend that they participate there. The easiest method of attending is to either take the tram or park on the US side of the border and walk across. Once there use a ride sharing app like Uber and arrange transportation to Las Playas de Tijuana. (The Beach). The event will occur right at the border wall on the beach. We expect that the experience will be the same on both sides. PLEASE NOTE A PASSPORT IS ALWAYS REQUIRED TO CROSS INTERNATIONAL BORDERS. ArtPower is not directly managing the Tijuana event, it is being coordinated by ERIZO.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED BUT DOES NOT GUARANTEE ADMISSION
Due to state park regulations, registration is required for this event, but does not guarantee admission. We will accept participants until we hit the maximum capacity of 500 set by the state park. We want to make sure we have as many people participating as possible, hence why online registration is a bit higher to account for no-shows. Attendees must board an event shuttle to attend this event and be transported to the event space. Attendees will not be admitted to the event if they drive in their own vehicle or enter the park any other way than the event shuttles. More information on shuttle location and schedule to be announced soon.

Because of the unconventional nature and location of this event we wanted to provide some details to help prepare you for the experience. This event takes more effort and commitment from our patrons than we typically expect, but we hope it will be well worth the challenge to be a part of this truly unique binational choral event. Please read the following instructions carefully.

Registration:
Registration is required for this event, but does not guarantee admission. Once we reach 500 registered people for participation the day of the event we will not be able to accept anymore due to capacity restrictions set by the park. People who arrive to participate without registering will be turned away by park rules, we suggest arriving early to secure your spot. IF YOU NO LONGER PLAN ON ATTENDING PLEASE NOTIFY ARTPOWER VIA EMAIL AT MOCLARK@UCSD.EDU SO WE CAN RELEASE YOUR SPOT FOR SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS EAGER TO PARTICIPATE.

Parking & Shuttles:
Border Field State Park requires that all attendees for this event be shuttled in from outside of the park. People who try to drive themselves into the park in personal vehicles will be turned away from the event.

PARKING & SHUTTLE LOCATION:
Southwest High School

Attendees will park in the Southwest High School parking lot where they can check-in, be given a wristband by ArtPower staff/volunteers, and board a shuttle directly to the event drop off point in Border Field State Park.

SHUTTLE SCHEDULE:
Shuttles will start loading at 1:45pm at Southwest High School. We suggest arriving early to secure your spot on a shuttle and at the event. The last shuttle to the event will leave at 2:30pm. Following the event (ending at approx. 4:15pm) shuttles will start running immediately back to the Southwest High School parking lot at 4:25pm and 5:00pm.

Event Area:
The singing/concert experience will take place directly on the beach of Border Field State Park in a designated event space. Attendees will only be admitted into the event space if they are wearing a wristband. This is a standing room only event. Attendees will be standing outside, uncovered on the sand for the duration of the event. Please prepare for the conditions: wear comfortable shoes, weather appropriate clothes, apply sunscreen, and bring water bottles to keep hydrated.

Attendees will be able to explore Border Field State Park before the event starts. However, once the event begins all attendees must be in the designated event area. Attendees can leave the event area to use the restroom and water fountain but will need to be re-checked into the event area with wristband upon return.

RESTROOMS:
Porta-potties will be located directly east of the event space.

ADA:
There will be an accessible participation area alongside the beach made available to ADA patrons. Because the event is directly on the beach on a very uneven, sandy surface, it is not fully navigable for people with mobility disabilities. However, this designated participation area will be on a level service path with clear visibility of the event for those in wheelchairs. There will be very limited amounts of ADA parking onsite, available on a first-come, first-serve, basis for those who are physically unable to board a shuttle. As an undergraduate studying English at UC Berkeley, Samin Nosrat took a detour into the kitchen at Chez Panisse restaurant that happily determined the course of her life and career. Since 2000, she has pursued her twin passions of food and words with equal vigor, aiming to create work that inspires, creates community, and raises cultural, social, and environmental awareness. Her New York Times bestselling book, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking, won the 2018 James Beard General Cookbook of the Year, among other notable awards. A documentary series based on the book is now streaming on Netflix. She’s currently working on her next book, titled What to Cook.

One of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2019, Nosrat will be in conversation with James Beard award-winning chef, radio host, and restaurant owner Evan Kleiman.

Inheritance

Inheritance is a timely multimedia chamber opera about gun violence in America, based on the true story of Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune. An eccentric widow self-imprisoned in her labyrinthine mansion, Winchester was haunted by the spirits of the thousands killed by Winchester weapons.

With music by Lei Liang and libretto by Matt Donovan, Inheritance interweaves Winchester’s story with events from contemporary American life, asking complex questions about complicity, atonement, and gun violence in our society. Led by music director Steven Schick and directed by Cara Consilvio, the performance also features Grammy Award–winning soprano Susan Narucki.
